Yet when Jacek reached out offering the new Voigtländer 75mm f/2.8 VM APO-Skopar for field testing, I jumped at the opportunity.
For me – a photographer living with chronic illness (sarcoidosis, joint pain) and navigating the world with a rollator – photography is not just an artistic expression. It is my daily therapy, my rehabilitation, and my anchor. Being trusted with such magnificent glass provides a tremendous surge of motivation to overcome physical fatigue and create.

First Impressions: Compact Metal Artistry & Dedicated Hood
- Pocketable All-Metal Build: Small enough to fit into a palm or jacket pocket, completely relieving neck and wrist strain during long sessions with a walker.
- Dedicated Metal Lens Hood: Exceptionally stylish and functional, finishing off the vintage silhouette on the Nikon Zf beautifully.
- Velvety Focusing Ring: Damped to perfection for sub-millimeter manual adjustments.
75mm at f/2.8: The Understated Portrait Sweet Spot
- Natural Working Distance: An intimate focal length that avoids intruding on the subject while preventing the perspective flattening of longer telephotos.
- Flattering Isolation: At f/2.8, depth of field is gorgeously shallow yet forgiving enough to keep critical facial features in crisp focus.
Three Demanding Test Fields
- Daily Dog Walks with Rollator: Managing leash, wheels, and camera proved completely fatigue-free thanks to the featherlight form factor.

- Classic Car Club Shoot: Polished chrome, direct sun, and sharp vehicular lines handled with zero chromatic aberrations thanks to true apochromatic (APO) optics.
The “Focus Bubble” (3D Pop), My Custom Zf Setup & 90% First-Try Accuracy
The defining optical hallmark of this lens is its dramatic separation between the in-focus plane and out-of-focus background. I coined this the “Focus Bubble” (3D Pop) – the in-focus plane visibly bulges forward, while the foreground and background dissolve into creamy smoothness.
The greatest revelation? How effortlessly visible critical focus is right in the Nikon Zf viewfinder, with a completely clean image and zero electronic assists!
My Secret Configuration (100% Zoom & Peaking Mapped to the Video Record Button):
Many photographers keep focus peaking permanently active, cluttering the composition with colored fringes. I configure my cameras (both the Nikon Zf and Z9) with a custom ergonomic shortcut:
- In full-frame view, the EVF is 100% clean – allowing me to frame and focus purely by the lens’s natural optical 3D pop.
- In photo mode, I assign the dedicated red Video Record button (located right next to the shutter release) to trigger 100% Zoom with Focus Peaking (color-peaking red highlights).
This puts instant 100% magnification right under my index finger without requiring me to adjust my grip on the camera.
Non-CPU Lens Revolution in Nikon Zf & Z9: Custom Naming & Native EXIF Aperture Recording Without Pricey Adapters!
I must highlight a feature that represents an absolute game-changer for manual lens aficionados on Nikon Zf and Z9 bodies:
- Full Lens Naming in Camera: In the “Non-CPU Lens Data” menu, Nikon doesn’t just ask for focal length and maximum aperture – it allows you to type in the custom name of the lens (e.g., Voigtländer 75mm f/2.8), keeping profiles neatly cataloged.
- Command Dial Aperture Sync & Direct EXIF Recording (Nikon Zf Killer Feature!): The Nikon Zf introduced an option where you can use the camera’s front sub-command dial to match the aperture value physically set on the lens’s mechanical ring. The camera records this exact aperture straight into the image’s EXIF metadata!
- No Need for Expensive Electronic Adapters: Traditionally, photographers adapting Leica M glass who wanted EXIF aperture data were forced to invest in expensive smart electronic adapters (featuring embedded chips or tiny mechanical dials with only a few predefined steps). On the Nikon Zf, you can use a simple, robust, budget-friendly mechanical adapter! Even better, the Zf allows dialing in aperture in precise 1/3 EV increments (e.g., f/2.8, f/3.2, f/3.5, f/4.0, f/4.5, f/5.0, f/5.6, etc.), ensuring Lightroom or Capture One catalogs have complete, accurate metadata.
90% Confirmation & The Preview Time Paradox:
In practice, I would establish focus visually on the clean screen and then tap the record button merely to confirm critical focus. In 90% of instances, focus was already tack sharp! Occasionally I was off by mere millimeters, easily corrected with a featherlight touch.
Yet here lies the paradox: even with such an instantaneous button assignment, taking that split second to punch in, look, and verify was often long enough for the subject to drift out of critical focus! A gust of wind blowing the model’s hair, a slight step from the dog, or a micro-sway of my own balance with the walker meant that during the preview pause, the wafer-thin focal plane shifted. If I had simply trusted my eyes and tripped the shutter immediately instead of checking zoom, the frame would have been dead sharp!
Muscle Memory: When Eye AF Becomes Irrelevant
Thanks to the ergonomic finger focus tab inherited from Leica M rangefinder heritage, muscle memory quickly takes command. Within hours, your thumb instinctively memorizes tab angles for 1 meter, 1.5 meters, or 3 meters.
When your hand’s muscle memory synchronizes with what your eye sees in the EVF, Eye AF algorithms become practically redundant. You nail focus faster, more deliberately, and with complete creative ownership.
The Mirrorless EVF Reality: “What You See in the Viewfinder is Already History”
Here is a crucial principle I have known and accounted for over years of shooting, and something I always remind photographers transitioning to manual glass on mirrorless systems:
👉 What you see in an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) is already history!
When you look through an EVF and see a fast-moving subject precisely where you want it, in physical reality, that subject may already be ahead. This stems from the physics of sensor readout, display refresh latency, and image processing pipeline delays.
Looking at verified lab benchmarks:
- On conventional BSI sensor cameras like the Sony A7 IV, electronic shutter sensor readout takes roughly 67 ms (0.067 s) (often confused in online forum discussions with single-shot cycle times around 0.57s). In fast-paced action, that readout lag combined with display delay is noticeably felt!
- The Nikon Zf achieves approximately 50.5 ms sensor readout (dropping to ~26 ms in high-speed burst mode), with prefocused shutter lag under 0.05 s, delivering a significantly more responsive feel powered by the EXPEED 7 processor.
- Meanwhile, a flagship powerhouse like the Nikon Z9 operates in a league of its own: its stacked CMOS sensor scans the full frame in a staggering 3.7 ms (0.0037 s), while its Dual-Stream EVF latency is down to just ~20 ms (0.0200 s)!
Unlike traditional DSLRs or optical rangefinders (like a Leica M), where photons travel to your retina at the speed of light in real time, mirrorless shooting demands anticipating this latency gap.
Testing the Voigtländer 75mm on fast dog walks, after a few days I instinctively anticipated where my dog would be a second ahead. I set focus slightly ahead of his trajectory and tripped the shutter micro-seconds before he crossed the focal threshold. The result? Pin-sharp, edge-to-edge critical focus on dynamic motion. When shooting manual glass on mirrorless: anticipate the frame, don’t chase it!
Final Thoughts & A Dream to Fulfill
The Voigtländer 75mm f/2.8 VM APO-Skopar is a lens with true soul. Parting with it will be difficult.
